Malcolm McLeoran b. Southend 1771 and his children and grandchildren

The McLarans of Dalby Story
Since 2021 the website's focus has changed dramatically. It was originally intended to record just the history of Malcolm McLaran (d. 1884 at Dalby, Queensland) and his family in Australia. Malcolm's roots in Scotland were considered too complicated.

A single email from Campbeltown historian, Angus Martin, and a mistake in a death certificate provided the keys to unlocking the story of the McLaran family in Southend from 1700 to 1890. Malcolm was in fact b. 1800 and he had two siblings:
  • Jean McLeoran b. 1796.
  • Archibald McLaren b. 1807.

The fates of the offspring of these three siblings is clearly explained in the family tree above.

Prior to 2022, no published history of our Southend McLeoran / McLaran / McLaren family has correctly identified Malcolm's true parents, his correct birth date or his siblings.

Malcolm McLeoran and Margaret McVicar had 15 grandchildren born between 1822 and 1851. The destinations and lives of 12 of the 15 have now (as of 2024) been determined. The missing three - the older sons of Malcolm McLaran - remain a mystery. They vanished from Scottish records after 1851, but the search continues and perhaps the best guide may be to "follow the sheep".
