Malcolm McLaran's Family

Malcolm McLaran* and his family emigrated from Southend in Argyllshire, Scotland to Moreton Bay in 1853 aboard the immigrant ship, America.

Malcolm was accompanied by his (second) wife and his 5 youngest children. All were born in the  Southend or Campbelton parishes in Argyllshire.

The website has pages for:
  • Malcolm himself
  • his second wife, Jane McShenoig
  • eldest daughter, Catherine
  • Donald McLaran prior to marriage
  • Donald McLaran and family post marriage
  • Duncan McLaren
  • second daughter, Margaret
  • Malcolm & Jane's son, Alexander McLaren

Of the many hundreds of Malcolm McLaran's descendants alive in 2017, sadly only 4 perhaps, all descendants of Donald, bear the family surname.

*Various spellings of the surname "McLaran" are used (hopefully consistently) throughout this website. Please refer to the page on family names.

The fate of sons John & Malcolm McLeoran is yet to be determined. Duncan McLaren (described as Malcolm's 5th son in the Dalby Herald - see below) had no issue.  Records do not attribute any children to Alexander but this website suggests otherwise.

It is also possible that Malcolm had 3 other sons who emigrated to USA or Canada or remained in Scotland.

Q & A: Questions and (possible) Answers:

Q1.    Did Malcolm or any of the McLeoran family ever live in Balquhidder?
A1.    Evidence suggests they did not. It is unlikely that any of the family or even Malcolm's parents visited the ancestral home of Clan McLaren. Refer Scottish Roots page.

Q2.    Did any family members have Irish roots?
A2.
Malcolm McLaran's first wife, Margaret McQuilkan, was born in Ireland, according to the 1841 census.
